You tap the memories, knowledge, legends, tales, and lore that other mortals hold about a subject, which must be an important person, place, or thing. If the subject is present, increase the degree of success of the primary check by one step; if you had only vague information about it beforehand, decrease the degree of success by one step. The two modifiers cancel out when a present subject is one you know almost nothing about.
Degrees of success
- Critical Success
- For 1 hour after the ritual ends you sort through memories that are mostly coherent, favoring accurate or useful information over misremembered knowledge and exaggerated tales.
- Success
- For 1 hour after the ritual ends you learn information useful for further inquiry but generally incomplete or enigmatic. As mortal memory and storytelling go, you are likely to learn several contradictory versions.
- Failure
- You fail to learn any useful legends.
- Critical Failure
- Your mind is overwhelmed by the knowledge at your disposal. You cannot sense or respond to anything in the present for 1 week, beyond necessities like breathing and sleeping. On recovering, you can retrain one of your skills into a Lore based on what you were accessing, as though you had spent 1 week retraining.
