Innermost of the Elemental Planes, the Plane of Air is a vast realm of wind, storms and open sky, lit by great artificial globes of flame and by distant starlight from the material universe. It is mostly cloud and empty air, but not entirely without solid ground: rock and ice are created by the residents or dragged in from the Plane of Earth and the neighboring Plane of Water, and the returning Plane of Wood has let loose giant pieces of driftwood into it.
Drifting spheres of brass and iron make the most convenient navigational aids. The brass ones house the cities of a vast genie empire whose trade network crosses the skies and ventures to other planes, kept aloft by natural and magical flight and by great airships. The iron ones are shunned as cursed. Air creatures are at home here; earth creatures find little solid ground to orient themselves by.
Planar traits
- Air
- Mostly open space and air of varying turbulence, with rare islands of floating stone and other elements. Atmospheres are usually breathable, though they may include clouds of acidic or toxic gas. Earth creatures are uncomfortable here, having little solid ground to orient by.
- Subjective Gravity
- All bodies of mass can be centers of gravity with the same force, but only if a non-mindless creature wills it. Unattended items and mindless creatures treat the plane as microgravity. A creature moves normally along a solid surface by imagining down near its feet; designating that direction is a free action with the concentration trait. Suspended in midair, a creature can replicate flight by choosing a down direction and falling in it, moving up to its Speed or fly Speed using the Fly action.
